There has been increasing dissatisfaction over recent years at mobile phone manufacturers using a whole host of different power adaptors.

Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung are famous for such, using their own proprietary connections. This has meant that every time you changed your phone, you needed a new adaptor; and without doubt over the years you end up with draws full of various adaptors and chargers for all different types of phones.

In terms of smartphones, Mini SB seems to have becomes pretty much the standard, but things are beginning to change.

10 of the largest manufacturers have confirmed that from 2010 they will begin using one common adaptor, the MicroUSB connection.

Already used on some devices, including Blackberry and Palm MicroUSB connection is already beginning to become a more common adaptor.

With these changes that have been brought about by growing EU pressure and simple recognition of the cost savings, it will mean that you will have to buy all the MicroUSB accessories necessary.

However over time, it should mean that you have to buy less power cables, car chargers and cradles thanks to this agreement. It should also mean that in a few years, when buying a new phone it will be just the phone and battery and not mains chargers as it will be assumed that you already own them, thus potentially bring the cost down on the handset fractionally.

The 10 companies include: Samsung, Nokia, Apple, LG and Sony Ericsson.

Will more manufacturers join?  It is possible and likely should they wish to remain competitive and in touch with their customer base.
